Kasubi Royal Tombs

Located on Kasubi Hill in Kampala, Kasubi Tombs site is an active religious site in the Buganda kingdom. Its burial grounds for four former Kabakas (kings of Buganda) and place where the Kabaka and his representatives frequently carry out important rituals related to Ganda culture. It is also recognized worldly as a world heritage site as declared by United Nations Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The heritage of this traditional site date back to 1882 when Kabaka Mutesa relocated his palace to Nabulagala hill just like his predecessor Kabaka Suuna II and upon his settlement, he renamed the hill Kasubi in memory of his birth place which is located at about 50km east of this site. A gigantic palace was constructed on top of a hill and the big house was named Muziba Azala Mpanga in which he stayed until his death in 1884 following long illness.

The Royal Mile (Lubiri Palace and Bulange Parliament)

At the other end of a ceremonial Royal drive leading from parliament on Buganda Kingdom, Lubiri Palace was built in 1922 .The building was duly converted to army barracks, while an adjacent site became a notorious underground prison and torture-execution chamber built by Idi Amin in the 1970s. Guides will lead you to this terrifying site, a dark concrete tunnel with numerous dark, damp cells separated by an electrified passage of water to prevent escape. At the gate of this palace is a traditional fire source that has never burnt out since the inception of the Buganda monarchy/Kingdom and shall never stop burning least a king is dead. Here is a representation of all Baganda Clans and their respective role in this Kingdom since time immemorial as narrated by a royalist at this fire source. A mail away but directly positioned gate to gate is the Bulange- a parliament in which the Kabaka and his ministers have since old days sat to deliberate upon issues concerning Buganda Kingdom. Independence Monument

The Independence Monument is a sign of Uganda’s Independence and this was constructed by former British Colonial Government just before Uganda celebrated its first independence on Tuesday 9th October 1962. The monument exhibits a man unwrapping a child and raising the child to touch the sky. The sculpture indicates a new born country that is totally free from bondage of colonialism. Current with the wonderful ornamentation around the monument, one needs to have a camera for the memorable photo shot and capture of the sight.

Uganda Museum

Located on Kira road, Uganda Museum is the largest and first museum to be established in Kampala. Established to showcase Uganda’s cultural heritage with displays of ethnological and natural-historical exhibits, Uganda Museum was built in 1908 and its remarkable collection spans over two million years of human history. It’s the only place where visitors on Uganda safaris can easily enjoy African history, cultures and treasures of Uganda under one roof.

Rubaga Cathedral

Situated on Lubaga Hill, in Lubaga Division, 3kms away form the city of Kampala, the twin-towered Roman Catholic cathedral is the oldest Cathedral in Uganda. It has great historical importance: in the transept is a memorial to the Uganda Martyrs (dozens of Ugandan Christians burnt or hacked to death by KabakaMwanga II in 1885 and 1886 for refusing to renounce the white man’s religion); 22 Catholic victims, later declared saints, are enshrined in the stained-glass windows.

Old Kampala National Mosque

Old Kampala National Mosque famously called Gaddafi National Mosque is a mosque situated at Kampala Hill in the Old Kampala area of Kampala, Uganda. Completed in 2006, it seats up to 15,000 worshippers and can hold another 1,100 in the gallery, while the terrace will cater for another 3,500. Colonel Muammar Gaddafi of Libya built the mosque as a gift to Uganda, and for the benefit of the Muslim population. Uganda has many mosques but this one is a skyscraper mosque. The mosque is the major feature on the oldest hill in the city offering unrivalled 360 degrees views of Kampala from the Minaret. The Mosque is regarded as the largest in Africa and when visiting the site , be prepared to change your style as ladies will be required to experience and dress in long skirts and headscarf. All included in the ticket entrance fee, you experience a mix of modern and traditional, African, European and Arabic influences; the mosque is definitely a worthy visit while in Kampala.

Bahai Temple

The temple is located on Kikaya Hill off the Gayaza road and it is the only one of its kind in whole of Africa. Sitting on 52 acres of land, the temple is has a unique architectural master piece. It seats on a beautiful park like ground with lots of stunning trees most of them fruit tree species plus flowers as well as a green-carpet like grass with clean clear gazetted paths leading to the dome. This park like environment attracts many people who sit on the grass and have a calm moment or hold picnics not forgetting couples in love who flock this place for quality time.

Namugongo Martyrs Shrine

Lying 16 kilometers east of Kampala off Jinja Road, Namugongo were formerly a place of execution of all people who committed grave offences in the kingdom of Buganda. It is here that 14 of the 22 Uganda Martyrs offered their life to Christ (burnt alive), on the orders of king Mwanga in 1886, having refused to denounce their Christian faith. Following the holocaust of these Martyrs which reached a climax on 3rd June, 1886 Namugongo has steadily taken on the image of attraction as a place of pilgrimage, as God simultaneously has honoured them before Believers.
Being memorial place in Uganda, Every 3rd June the Catholic Church and their counterpart of Anglican persuasion flock into this place from all over Africa most of them by foot to commemorate this day in honour of their Religious heroes. National theatre and craft village

This is positioned in the Centre of Kampala Capital City opposite Uganda parliament on Plot 2, 4 & 6 De-Winton Road, National theatre is the place to enjoy the quality programs of music, film, dance and drama performances in the Kampala. The site also has Nommo Gallery that features exhibitions of works of art by both Ugandan and foreign artists. The Centre also offers a snack bar, which claims to offer the “best African dishes served with best spices and ambience”, and the Craft Village, where locally made handicrafts are sold.

Owino Market

Located around Nakivubo Stadium, Owino is diversified market with each and every thing right from traditional medicines to televisions. It’s most popular for its second-hand clothing, but you can also buy some material and let one of the army of tailors sews you something new.
Part of the old taxi park in central Kampala. A ‘dirty mental chaos’ is probably the best words to describe Owino and the taxi park! It’s the kind of place you might go in to with 5 friends and come out alone and inexplicably missing your left shoe…Nevertheless it is definitely an experience worth having just to appreciate the hecticness of everyday life and get a contrast to Kololo’s manicured lawns. The market sells nearly anything you can think of, but the best buys for foreigners are on the African print fabrics sold here by length, and the wide range of second-hand clothes and shoes, including many designer labels – I’ve got a great Ralph Lauren jumper from there…! There is also quite an interesting Voodoo market, selling all sorts of wierd and wonderful things if you can manage to negotiate the maze and find it! As always make sure to haggle and keep your personal belongings close and don’t wear any obvious jewelry or big handbags.
